AUC Marks International Women’s Day 2026

The African Union Commission will today, Monday, 9 March 2026, host a special commemoration of International Women’s Day to honour the contributions of women within the institution.

The event will be held under the theme “Honouring Women of the African Union: Voices, Work and Community.” The commemoration forms part of the Commission’s continued efforts to recognise the dedication, professionalism and community spirit of women who contribute daily to the work and mission of the organisation.

The initiative also aligns with the aspirations of Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term development blueprint, which promotes inclusive growth and the empowerment of women across the continent.

The programme will begin with an Interactive Dialogue at 10:30 a.m. in the Medium Conference Hall at the Commission’s headquarters. The session will provide an opportunity for staff members to share reflections, experiences and perspectives on the role of women in advancing the work of the Commission and supporting the broader goals of the African Union.

A communal dinner will follow later in the evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Hall of the Commission, bringing together staff members to celebrate the contributions of women and strengthen the sense of community within the institution.

In preparation for the morning dialogue, staff members are encouraged to participate in shaping the discussion by submitting questions, reflections or personal stories in advance through the QR code provided in the event announcement.

The African Union Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and recognising the achievements of women as a vital component of Africa’s development and integration agenda.

Observed annually around the world, International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while reaffirming the commitment to advancing gender equality.
