Mawutor Adzato, Founder of the Mawutor Project and Director of Babel AI, has launched a 120-day walk across Ghana. The initiative promotes the preservation of indigenous seeds, African languages and traditional knowledge.
Adzato and his team started the journey on 6 March 2026 from Paga in the Upper East Region. They will walk through major towns and cities before ending in Aflao in the Volta Region.
During the first days of the walk, the team met the District Chief Executive of Kassena-Nankana West District. They presented the initiative and explained its goals. The team also visited traditional leaders in Paga. The chiefs welcomed the delegation and praised the initiative.
The Babel Initiative promotes the creation of community seed banks. Farmers will use these banks to preserve and exchange indigenous crop varieties. Organisers say the seed banks will support food security and protect agricultural biodiversity.
The team is also documenting African languages and oral traditions. Elders and community knowledge keepers share stories in their own voices. The project records these stories for preservation.
The initiative will store the recordings in community data centres. These centres will serve as digital archives for languages, oral histories and cultural knowledge.
The collected data will support the development of the Babel AI model. This technology will make translation between African languages easier.
The walk from Paga to Aflao continues to attract attention and support from communities across Ghana. The initiative aims to protect Africa’s seeds, languages and knowledge systems for future generations. 🌱🌍
