Backing African Solutions: CAR Calls for True Peacekeeping Support

Peace cannot be imported from overseas. It must be built from the ground up by the people who live there. This was the central theme of the address by Faustin-Archange Touadéra, President of the Central African Republic (CAR), at the UN General Assembly. Speaking plainly about the realities of his country, he highlighted the immediate security and development hurdles his nation faces on a daily basis.

The CAR has spent years navigating armed conflict and working tirelessly to establish stability. President Touadéra shared that while progress is being made, the road to total peace is incredibly difficult without the right kind of support. He called on the international community to fundamentally change how it approaches conflict resolution in Africa. Instead of imposing outside plans, the world must increase its backing for African-led peacebuilding efforts.

“True security comes when local leaders and communities are empowered to solve their own challenges,” Touadéra explained. He argued that regional organizations and African governments understand the cultural and political roots of their conflicts far better than distant diplomats. However, these local efforts are often severely underfunded. “We have the will and the strategies, but we need genuine international backing to turn our plans into lasting peace,” he noted.

His speech was a powerful reminder that while Africa is ready to take charge of its own security, it should not have to carry the financial burden alone. Touadéra’s plea was a call for a new kind of partnership, based on respect, adequate resources, and African sovereignty.
