Inside its galleries are nearly 7,000 objects preserving the story of Mali\u2019s civilisations, traditions, and artistic heritage across centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Created in 1953 during the colonial era as the\u00a0<em>Museum of French Sudan<\/em>, the institution began with a modest collection of about 3,000 objects stored at the National School of Engineering. After independence in 1962, it officially became the\u00a0<em>National Museum of Mali<\/em>, reflecting the country\u2019s desire to reclaim and preserve its own cultural narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum entered a new phase in 1977, when Mali faced a historic choice between building a bridge and a national museum complex. The country chose culture and heritage. Construction began in 1981, and the new museum opened its doors a year later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the museum offers visitors a journey through Mali\u2019s past with three major permanent exhibitions:&nbsp;<em>Millennial Mali<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Ritual Masterpieces<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Textiles of Mali<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the first objects to capture attention is the sacred&nbsp;<em>Calao<\/em>&nbsp;bird of the Senufo people, a symbolic figure representing wisdom, fertility, and spiritual knowledge. Nearby, visitors discover ceremonial masks, Dogon statues, Bamana ritual objects, and the famous&nbsp;<em>ciwaras<\/em>, symbols of courage and hard work deeply rooted in Malian tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The archaeological galleries take visitors even further back in time with ancient artifacts from Djenn\u00e9-Djeno, prehistoric discoveries, and funeral steles from Gao, revealing Mali\u2019s place in the long history of African civilisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another section celebrates Mali\u2019s rich textile culture through\u00a0<em>bogolan<\/em>\u00a0mud cloth, Fulani fabrics, handmade carpets, and traditional weaving tools that remain integral to everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than a museum, the National Museum of Mali is a living home of memory \u2014 protecting the stories, traditions, and identity of a people for generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>","protected":false},"featured_media":1119,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false},"categories":[10],"tags":[110,105,107,109,106,103,101,102,104,108],"class_list":["post-1128","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-african-civilizations","tag-african-museums","tag-archaeological-collections-mali","tag-bamako-attractions","tag-cultural-heritage-mali","tag-mali-heritage","tag-malian-history","tag-national-museum-of-bamako","tag-national-museum-of-mali","tag-west-african-history"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
