Across Africa, conversations about preserving indigenous languages often focus on policy, education reforms and cultural programmes. Yet one of the most effective tools for language preservation may already be in our schools: spelling competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, English spelling bees have turned language learning into a respected academic activity. They encourage reading, improve vocabulary and build confidence among children. African languages can benefit from the same model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children preparing for language competitions often read more, ask elders about unfamiliar words and engage with proverbs, stories and local expressions. Parents and teachers become active partners in language transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This strengthens identity while improving literacy and educational outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, initiatives like Y\u0254ekp\u0254 align directly with the vision of Agenda 2063\u2014the African Union\u2019s blueprint for \u201cThe Africa We Want.\u201d Agenda 2063 calls for an Africa with a strong cultural identity, common heritage, values and ethics, while emphasising the preservation of African languages, educational transformation and youth empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spelling competitions contribute to several Agenda 2063 aspirations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Aspiration 1<\/strong> \u2013 building well-educated citizens through a skills revolution supported by education and innovation.
\u2022 Aspiration 5<\/strong> \u2013 strengthening Africa\u2019s cultural identity and preserving African languages.
\u2022 Aspiration 6<\/strong> \u2013 empowering children and youth to shape Africa\u2019s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa\u2019s linguistic future will not be secured only through declarations and policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
