Disease does not stop at a border. A virus does not need a passport to travel from one country to another. That is why Africa’s health security depends on more than the strength of individual countries. It depends on how well the continent works together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recent Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is another reminder that infectious diseases can spread quickly if they are not detected and contained early. Health authorities in the DRC, working with the World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, have been monitoring cases, tracing contacts and supporting affected communities to prevent further spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa has faced major disease outbreaks before. Ebola, COVID-19, mpox and cholera have all tested the continent’s health systems. Each outbreak has shown that no country can fight alone. Information must be shared quickly. Medical supplies must reach affected areas on time. Scientists and health workers must work across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The African Union recognised this need when it established Africa CDC in 2017. Since then, the agency has become a key institution for coordinating disease surveillance, emergency response and public health cooperation across member states. Its role became especially visible during the COVID-19 pandemic, when countries worked together to improve testing, vaccine access and emergency preparedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Agenda 2063 also places health at the centre of Africa’s development. A healthy population is more productive. Children stay in school. Businesses remain open. Farmers continue producing food. Hospitals become places of healing instead of crisis management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Governments have a duty to invest in stronger health systems. This means training more doctors and nurses, improving laboratories, strengthening disease surveillance and ensuring rural communities have access to quality healthcare. Citizens also play an important role by reporting symptoms early, following public health guidance and rejecting misinformation during outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa has shown that cooperation saves lives. Every outbreak is a reminder that protecting one country ultimately helps protect the entire continent. Building one strong African health system is not only a medical goal.
