The African Union is urging countries to prepare now for what experts say could be a powerful <strong>Super El Ni\u00f1o<\/strong> during the 2026\/2027 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a meeting of African meteorological experts convened by the <strong>African Union Commission<\/strong>, weather specialists discussed how governments can strengthen early warning systems and disaster preparedness ahead of the expected climate event. The meeting focused on protecting lives, food production and national economies from severe weather impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An El Ni\u00f1o is a natural climate pattern that can change rainfall around the world. In Africa, it often brings floods to some regions and drought to others. Both extremes can damage crops, destroy homes, reduce water supplies and increase the risk of disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consequences reach far beyond farms. When harvests fail, food becomes scarce and prices rise. Families spend more on basic necessities. Businesses struggle. Governments face growing pressure to provide emergency support. In countries that rely on hydropower, prolonged drought can also reduce electricity generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union believes preparation is the best defence. Better weather forecasting, stronger early warning systems and closer cooperation between countries can help communities respond before disasters strike. Farmers can adjust planting schedules. Local authorities can prepare evacuation plans. Health services can stock essential supplies before emergencies occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach reflects <strong>Agenda 2063<\/strong>, which calls for a climate-resilient Africa that protects its people while promoting sustainable development. Preparing for climate shocks is no longer just an environmental issue. It is essential for food security, economic growth and public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens also have a role to play. Following weather advisories, protecting water sources and supporting community disaster preparedness can help reduce risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Africa cannot stop an El Ni\u00f1o from happening. But with good planning, science and cooperation, it can reduce its impact.
