Corruption is often described as a government problem. But across Africa, its impact is felt in everyday life. It affects the quality of schools children attend, the roads people travel on, the hospitals families depend on and the opportunities available to young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As Africa marked African Anti-Corruption Day<\/strong>, the African Union renewed calls for stronger action against corruption and greater commitment to transparency, accountability and ethical leadership across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The African Union has identified corruption as one of the biggest obstacles to Africa’s development. When public resources meant for development are lost through corruption, communities pay the price. Projects remain unfinished. Essential services become weaker. Citizens lose trust in institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fight against corruption is not only the responsibility of presidents, ministers and government agencies. It involves every African citizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person who refuses to pay a bribe. A journalist who investigates wrongdoing. A public official who protects public resources. A business owner who follows fair practices. A citizen who demands answers from leaders. All these actions contribute to building a culture of accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Under Agenda 2063<\/strong>, the African Union envisions a continent built on good governance, democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law. This vision cannot be achieved without institutions that serve citizens and leaders who are accountable for their decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The AU has also promoted initiatives such as the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption<\/strong>, which encourages member states to strengthen laws, improve transparency and cooperate in fighting corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, laws alone are not enough. A strong anti-corruption culture must begin in homes, schools, workplaces and communities. Young Africans, who represent the majority of the continent’s population, have a particularly important role in demanding integrity from those in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology is also creating new opportunities. Digital payment systems, open government platforms and access to information can reduce opportunities for corruption and make public institutions more transparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa’s development depends on trust. Citizens must trust institutions. Governments must trust citizens as partners. Leaders must understand that public office is a responsibility, not a privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fight against corruption is not about blaming one group. It is about building a shared commitment to fairness, honesty and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A corruption-free Africa will not happen overnight.
