The vision of an integrated Africa with free movement, shared prosperity, and stronger cooperation is at the heart of Agenda 2063. But as Africa continues building its institutions, one question remains important:\u00a0<strong>What can the continent learn from other regional models of integration?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Union (EU) offers one example of a regional bloc that has developed strong common institutions, including the European Parliament, which has legislative powers alongside other EU institutions. Its members have gradually transferred certain decision-making responsibilities from national governments to continental structures in areas of shared interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Africa&#8217;s path is different. The African Union (AU) brings together 55 Member States with diverse histories, economies, political systems and cultures. While the AU has established institutions such as the Pan-African Parliament to encourage continental dialogue and citizen participation, the Parliament currently has mainly advisory powers rather than the authority to create binding laws for all Member States. Pan-African Parliament<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comparison with Europe does not mean Africa should copy the European model. Africa must build institutions that reflect its own realities. However, there are important lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One key lesson is that strong regional integration requires strong institutions. The European experience shows that shared goals become easier to achieve when countries create mechanisms to implement common decisions. For Africa, this is especially important in areas such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), peace and security, infrastructure development and free movement of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another lesson is that citizens must be part of the process. Continental institutions cannot succeed if they remain distant from ordinary people. Africans must understand how decisions are made, how institutions serve them and how they can participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union&#8217;s strength will not come only from treaties signed by governments. It will come from citizens who believe that continental unity improves their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future of the Pan-African Parliament is therefore part of a larger conversation about Africa&#8217;s political future. Should it become more powerful? Should it have greater legislative authority? How can it remain accountable to citizens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are questions Africans must debate openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building the Africa We Want requires ambition, but it also requires institutions that match that ambition. Africa does not need to become another Europe.
