It could disrupt trade, raise the cost of living and slow economic growth across Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation and called on all parties to exercise restraint, pursue dialogue and uphold international law. The AU cautioned that further escalation could have far-reaching consequences for the continent and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Red Sea is one of the world&#8217;s busiest shipping routes, linking Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Every year, millions of tonnes of food, fuel, raw materials and manufactured goods destined for African markets pass through this strategic maritime corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any disruption to shipping could drive up transport and insurance costs, delay the movement of goods and increase the prices of essential commodities. Countries that depend heavily on imported food and fuel are likely to feel the greatest impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union also warned that continued instability could undermine efforts to expand trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Reliable and secure maritime routes are essential to improving connectivity between African economies and strengthening the continent&#8217;s position in global trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaffirming the AU&#8217;s commitment to peace, the Commission Chairperson urged all parties to avoid actions that could further destabilise the region. The statement also stressed the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring maritime security in line with international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Africa, the Red Sea is more than a strategic waterway. It is a vital economic lifeline that supports trade, investment and economic development. Prolonged insecurity could slow economic recovery, fuel inflation and place additional pressure on households already grappling with the effects of climate change, supply chain disruptions and global economic uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AU&#8217;s message is unequivocal: peace and stability in the Red Sea are essential not only for regional security but also for Africa&#8217;s long-term economic resilience.
