ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia<\/strong> \u2014 The African Union (AU) has renewed its call for diplomacy as tensions in the Red Sea continue to threaten regional stability and international trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint. The AU warned that further escalation could have serious consequences for peace, security and economic stability across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission stressed that dialogue remains the most effective path to resolving disputes and preventing a wider conflict. It called on all parties to prioritise peaceful engagement and avoid actions that could deepen tensions or endanger civilian lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The African Union also reaffirmed the importance of respecting international law and safeguarding freedom of navigation. Maintaining secure maritime routes, the Commission noted, is critical to global trade and to the economies of many African countries that depend on uninterrupted shipping for essential goods and energy supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Sea is one of the world’s most strategic waterways, linking Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Disruptions to maritime traffic can affect trade flows, increase transport costs and delay the delivery of humanitarian assistance and critical imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the AU, the crisis is not only a security concern but also a development challenge. Prolonged instability could undermine economic growth, weaken investor confidence and complicate efforts to accelerate regional integration and trade across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and its readiness to support international efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting stability. The statement underscored the Union’s long-standing belief that diplomacy remains the most sustainable path to lasting peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As tensions continue to rise, the AU is urging all parties to choose dialogue over confrontation. For Africa, preventing further instability in the Red Sea is about more than avoiding conflict\u2014it is about protecting livelihoods, preserving economic resilience and safeguarding the continent’s future
