Africa is sitting on some of the world’s most important resources for the next industrial revolution. Lithium, cobalt, copper, graphite, manganese and rare earth minerals are essential to batteries, electric vehicles, renewable energy and digital technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there is a problem Africa knows too well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For decades, the continent has exported raw materials and imported finished products made from them. The wealth leaves as ore and returns as expensive technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That model is beginning to face a serious challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Democratic Republic of Congo has banned exports of copper and cobalt concentrates in a move designed to push more processing into the country. Zambia, meanwhile, is targeting a major expansion of copper production while the industry pushes for greater local processing and infrastructure investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bigger question is not whether Africa should mine more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is whether Africa can turn mining into industrialisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That means refineries, battery plants, component manufacturing, engineering companies, research centres and skilled jobs\u2014not simply deeper holes in the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa’s critical minerals could become the foundation of a new manufacturing economy.
