But that could change.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States, China, Europe and other established powers dominate today\u2019s space race. Yet Africa has something increasingly important: a young population, growing technological capabilities, strategic geography and a continent-wide vision that already recognises outer space as critical to development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So the real question is not whether Africa belongs in the space race. It is whether Africa can build enough capacity to become a global space power.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Africa is already using satellites for weather forecasting, telecommunications, agriculture, mapping, disaster management and security. More African countries are developing space programmes, building satellites and investing in space science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moonshot is to go much further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What if Africa became a global space power\u2014not simply a consumer of space technology, but a creator, manufacturer and owner of it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opportunity is bigger than launching rockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stronger African space industry could create jobs in engineering, software, telecommunications, earth observation, manufacturing and research. Satellites could help farmers monitor crops, governments respond faster to disasters, communities prepare for climate shocks and businesses make better decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space technology could also help Africa better understand and manage its vast land, forests, oceans and mineral resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But becoming a space power requires more than individual national programmes. Africa needs cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means stronger continental investment in space science, shared infrastructure, research partnerships, African talent development and industries capable of producing more of the technology the continent currently imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Space Agency offers a platform for this ambition. But the real question is whether Africa will think of space as a strategic industry rather than simply a scientific achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Africa We Want cannot afford to leave the next frontier to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Africa has spent decades looking up at the stars.
