But can its growing presence in space translate into jobs, industries and greater prosperity on the ground?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly 20 African countries now have satellites in orbit, while African governments are expected to spend more than&nbsp;<strong>$800 million on space initiatives in 2026<\/strong>. The African Union has also established the African Space Agency to strengthen cooperation in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Africa, space is not simply about rockets or sending people into orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Satellites can help farmers monitor weather and drought, support communications, map infrastructure, track environmental changes and provide data for managing natural resources. This makes space technology increasingly relevant to Africa&#8217;s development challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is where&nbsp;<strong>Agenda 2063 Moonshoot 1<\/strong>&nbsp;comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first Moonshot sets a clear ambition:&nbsp;<strong>by 2033, every African Union Member State should attain at least middle-income status.<\/strong>&nbsp;The goal is part of Agenda 2063&#8217;s broader vision of a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But prosperity will require more than economic growth on paper. Africa needs productive industries, skilled workers, stronger businesses and greater control over the technologies that drive the modern economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That raises an important question about Africa&#8217;s space ambitions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who will own the technology?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">African countries increasingly work with international partners to build and launch satellites. These partnerships can provide valuable investment, expertise and training. But they should also help African countries develop their own capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long-term goal should not simply be to count African satellites in orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Africa needs engineers who can design them, companies that can build components, universities that can train the workforce, startups that can turn satellite data into useful services and governments that can use African-generated data to make better decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words,&nbsp;<strong>Africa needs to move from being a consumer of space technology to becoming a creator of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The continent&#8217;s space race is therefore about much more than what happens above the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is about what happens&nbsp;<strong>on the ground<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Africa can turn space technology into skills, businesses, jobs and innovation, its journey into orbit could become part of its journey towards prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The real Moonshot is not simply reaching space.
