Africa speaks thousands of languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are used in homes, markets, classrooms, workplaces, radio stations, and communities across the continent. They carry history, knowledge, humour, identity and everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there is a growing gap between the languages Africans speak and the content available to them in those languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Africa has the languages. What it needs now is more creators.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Go online, and it is easy to find news, educational resources, entertainment, and digital tools in English, French, and other international languages. But finding the same depth and variety of quality content in many African languages can be much harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not because Africans have nothing to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is partly because there are not enough people producing content in these languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa needs more journalists who can report confidently in African languages. It needs writers, editors, translators, presenters, voice artists, teachers, filmmakers, and digital creators who can produce content that is accurate, engaging, and professionally presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These skills matter because simply having a language is not enough. A language needs an active media and digital ecosystem to thrive in the modern world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The people behind the language<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the challenges facing efforts to expand African-language content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are talented language professionals across the continent, but they are not always easy to find, and opportunities to work professionally in African languages remain limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That creates a difficult cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is limited content because there are not enough creators. And there are not enough creators because the market for African-language content has not been developed enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even organisations committed to promoting African languages can encounter this challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is an uncomfortable reality: we can advocate for African-language content and still struggle to find enough people with the skills to produce it consistently.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n But recognising the problem is the beginning of solving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Building Africa’s language creators<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa needs to invest in the people who can take its languages into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Universities, media organisations, technology companies and language institutions can help create training and career pathways for African-language journalists, translators, broadcasters and digital creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Young Africans should also see their languages as professional assets\u2014not simply something spoken at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Artificial intelligence can help with translation, transcription, speech recognition and content production.
