Artificial intelligence is changing how people communicate, learn, work, and access information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as AI becomes part of everyday life, an important question is emerging for Africa: Will African languages be part of this technological transformation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many of the continent’s languages, the answer is still uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI systems learn from data. They need large amounts of text, speech, and other language resources to understand how people communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many African languages have far less digital data available than widely used global languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An AI system may be able to translate, understand or generate content in English or French with impressive accuracy, while struggling with a language spoken by millions of Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data behind the language<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The challenge is not that African languages are too complex for technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is that many of them have not yet been sufficiently documented and digitised for modern AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be books, newspapers, recordings, oral traditions and other language resources available in communities, but much of this material is not yet organised in forms that can easily be used to develop language technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building better AI for African languages therefore requires investment in language data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means collecting and digitising texts, recording speech, developing dictionaries and terminology, creating language datasets and ensuring that communities have a role in how their linguistic resources are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI needs African-language experts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Technology alone cannot solve this challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa needs linguists, translators, writers, researchers, software developers, data specialists and media professionals working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is particularly important because language is more than words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meaning can depend on culture, context, history, and how people actually use a language in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An AI system can produce grammatically correct words and still misunderstand what a person means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human expertise remains essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This brings us back to one of the biggest challenges facing African-language development: the shortage of people with the skills needed to build and produce African-language digital resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The continent needs more young people trained at the intersection of language and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An opportunity for Africa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The AI revolution also presents an opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

African languages do not have to remain users of technologies developed elsewhere. African researchers and institutions can help shape technologies that understand African languages and reflect African realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better African-language AI could support education, translation, healthcare information, public services, media and communication across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It could also make digital tools accessible to people who are more comfortable communicating in African languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this future will not happen automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa must build the language resources, technical expertise and human capacity needed to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From preservation to innovation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For generations, much of the conversation around African languages has focused on preserving them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preservation remains important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the digital age demands something more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

African languages must become languages of innovation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They must be present in search engines, digital services, educational platforms, voice technologies and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Africa needs people who can make that happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future of African languages will not be secured simply by keeping them alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
