From copper and cobalt to lithium, platinum, gold and other critical minerals, the continent holds enormous mineral wealth. These resources are increasingly important to the global economy, particularly as demand grows for clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, batteries and advanced manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But having minerals is only the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bigger question is how much value Africa creates from them\u2014and how much of that value reaches its people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That question comes into focus as Electra Mining Africa<\/strong> takes place in Johannesburg from September 7\u201311, bringing together mining companies, suppliers, technology providers and industry professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Africa, the conversation should go beyond what is extracted from the ground. It should be about what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A mine can create jobs, but the economic opportunity can extend far beyond the mine itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mining requires engineers, geologists, technicians, equipment operators, software specialists and many other professionals. Around mining operations, businesses can also emerge to provide transport, food, accommodation, maintenance, equipment and other services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When minerals are processed closer to where they are extracted, even more opportunities can be created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead of exporting raw minerals and importing finished products, African countries can develop the industries, skills and infrastructure needed to process resources and manufacture products closer to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The mineral should not be the end of the value chain. It should be the beginning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Mining is also changing. Automation, artificial intelligence, robotics and data systems are transforming how mines operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa therefore needs people with the skills to operate, design and improve these technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A young African should not only see mining as a job underground.
