Africa is connecting faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fibre networks are expanding, mobile services are reaching more people, and investment in data centres, cloud infrastructure and digital services is growing across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These developments are important. But connectivity alone does not guarantee that Africans will benefit from the digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real test is what people can do<\/strong> once they are connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That question will be at the heart of conversations around ITW Africa in Nairobi from September 7\u201310, where telecommunications, fibre, mobile, cloud, data-centre and investment leaders will discuss the infrastructure shaping Africa’s digital future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From connection to opportunity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For an entrepreneur, better connectivity can mean reaching customers beyond their neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a student, it can mean accessing courses and information that were previously unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a farmer, it can provide access to market information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a job seeker, it can open access to opportunities beyond their immediate community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a small business, reliable internet can make digital payments, online marketing and regional trade easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But these opportunities depend on more than a signal reaching a phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People also need affordable access, relevant digital services, useful content and the skills to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is the digital economy speaking to?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is another challenge that deserves greater attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa is one of the world’s most linguistically diverse continents, yet much of the digital environment remains dominated by international languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person may have a smartphone and an internet connection but still struggle to find information, educational material or digital services in a language they understand best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being connected is not the same as being included.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is particularly important as artificial intelligence, digital public services, online education and other technologies become increasingly important to everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Africa’s digital transformation does not reflect its linguistic diversity, millions of people risk becoming consumers of the digital economy without having an equal opportunity to participate in creating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building the infrastructure\u2014and the people<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Africa therefore needs to invest in two things at the same time: digital infrastructure and human capacity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The continent needs engineers, software developers, data specialists, cybersecurity experts, digital entrepreneurs and content creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also needs people who can develop digital tools and content in African languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates an opportunity for young Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The digital economy can generate careers that did not exist a generation ago. But young people need the education, training and opportunities to take part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A connected Africa that works for Africans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

ITW Africa’s focus on fibre, mobile, cloud, data centres, energy, investment and digital services reflects how much infrastructure is required to power Africa’s next phase of digital growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But infrastructure should ultimately serve people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal cannot simply be to connect more devices or build more data centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It must be to connect people to knowledge, markets, jobs, services and one another<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that includes connecting Africans to a digital world in which their languages, cultures and ideas have a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
