Speaking at high-level UN forums, both leaders criticized international financial institutions\u2014including the IMF and World Bank\u2014for maintaining rules that keep developing nations trapped in cycles of debt and dependency. Ruto exposed how emergency aid systems favor the wealthy, noting that rich countries received 64 percent of global Special Drawing Rights, while poor nations were left with a meager 2.4 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfrica is not waiting for external prescriptions,\u201d Ruto declared, highlighting the continent\u2019s bold steps to build homegrown financial institutions like the African Central Bank and mobilize local capital for infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Complementing this vision, Mahama launched the A Sovereign Future for Health<\/em> report during the “Accra Reset” side event, dismantling the traditional foreign aid framework. He argued that foreign donations and distant mandates undermine true independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor decades, nations of the Global South have been asked to own the results of health and development programmes, while others retain the control,\u201d Mahama stated. He countered this dynamic with a clear principle: \u201cNo Ownership Without Control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rather than relying on boardrooms in Geneva or Washington, both presidents advocated for domestic capacity building, local manufacturing, and fiscal discipline.
