President Ruto took aim at the uneven handling of global security, pointing out that conflicts in Sudan, the Sahel, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are often neglected while Western-backed crises receive immediate intervention and massive resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInternational law cannot be invoked loudly in one crisis, cautiously in another crisis, and disregarded when convenient,\u201d Ruto warned, calling out the dangerous erosion of trust in global institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Mahama expanded this push for equity by addressing the deep historical roots of global inequality. Demanding reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade, Mahama challenged world leaders to reject sanitized language when discussing historical crimes against Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere is no such thing as a slave,\u201d Mahama stated forcefully. \u201cThere were human beings who were trafficked and then enslaved by people who believed they could own those human beings as chattel.\u201d He emphasized that true global healing requires an honest reckoning, adding that \u201cwhen discussing slavery… we must always start by reclaiming racial equality, the dignity of Africans, the humanity of our ancestors who were enslaved and, as a matter of course, our own humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together, Ruto and Mahama presented a strong case for human rights.
