As the outbreak spreads across borders, the crisis is also highlighting the need for stronger regional cooperation and effective public communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DRC is facing a serious outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease. According to the country\u2019s Ministry of Health, the outbreak had recorded 10,351 infections and 5,026 deaths by 31 October 2026, with cases reported across 67 health zones in eight provinces. The outbreak has also raised regional concerns following reports of imported cases in Kenya and Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Health Organization (WHO), in its 23 October update, reported 9,704 confirmed cases and 4,687 deaths in the DRC as of 20 October. The figures reflect different reporting dates and underline the importance of regularly updated public health information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Containing the outbreak requires more than treatment facilities. Health authorities must identify cases quickly, trace contacts, monitor border crossings and ensure that communities understand how the disease spreads and where to seek help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insecurity, limited health resources and mistrust in some communities have made the response more difficult. WHO has called for stronger surveillance and coordinated cross-border action. It has also advised against travel and trade restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communication remains central to the response. Health messages must reach people in languages they understand, through trusted community leaders, local radio, health workers and other accessible channels. Clear information can help counter rumours, encourage early reporting and build public confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation reinforces the importance of cooperation in achieving the African Union\u2019s Agenda 2063 vision of a prosperous and healthy continent. Public health emergencies do not stop at national borders.
