LOMÉ / BAMAKO — The African Academy of Languages (ACALAN), an institution of the African Union, commends the Government of Togo for launching the National Local Languages Challenge under its Voix du Togo programme.
Rolled out on 2 October 2026, this citizen-led initiative integrates Togolese national languages directly into artificial intelligence, expanding access to vital digital public services.
Key Highlights:
- Community-Led AI: Citizens, linguists, and developers are contributing voice recordings and translations to build inclusive language models.
- Pilot Languages: The initial phase covers Ewe, Kabyè, and Moba, with plans to expand across all national languages.
- Real-World Impact: AI applications will bridge language barriers in healthcare, education, justice, and public administration.
“African languages are not static heritage items frozen in time—they are living instruments of innovation and opportunity shaping Africa’s digital future.”
ACALAN encourages African member states, technology partners, and young creators across the continent to replicate this model and invest in localized language data ecosystems.
