Africa’s Space Future Depends on the People It Trains

Africa can build satellites. It can launch missions. It can invest in space technology. But without skilled Africans to design, operate and improve these systems, the continent will remain dependent on others.

Africa’s space ambition therefore begins not with rockets or satellites, but with people.

Engineers, scientists, programmers, researchers, entrepreneurs and technicians will determine whether Africa becomes a consumer of space technology—or a creator and owner of it.

Universities in countries such as South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria and Ghana are training more young people in aerospace engineering, satellite technology and other space-related fields.

This is good news.

But there is a problem.

Many of these talented young people leave Africa after they graduate.

They go to Europe, North America, the Gulf and other parts of the world because they can find better-paying jobs, better equipment and more opportunities to build their careers.

Imagine a young engineer trained in Accra or Lagos who later moves abroad and helps build satellites for another country.

Africa paid for part of the education and training.

But another country gets the benefit of that person’s skills.

This is the brain drain — and it could become a serious problem for Africa’s space ambitions.

Some African countries are trying to change this.

South Africa has created research opportunities linked to its national space programmes. Nigeria has also expanded scholarships and training programmes designed to encourage young people to return home and work after completing their studies.

Agenda 2063 also supports the creation of centres of excellence where young Africans can receive high-quality training without having to leave the continent.

But training people is only one part of the solution.

Africa also needs to give them a reason to stay.

That means good jobs, decent salaries, modern equipment, research opportunities and space companies where young engineers can actually build things.

Because what is the point of training thousands of talented young Africans if they have to leave the continent to use their skills?

Africa cannot build a space industry if it keeps losing the people who know how to build it.
